AICD opening new doors for IPAA members

Tim Mares undertook the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD), Company Directors Course (CDC) in April 2017 and was thrilled when the opportunity was presented by his manager.

Five months after completing the course Tim has enriched his role as Director of Strategic Economics and Policy Coordination in the Department of State Development.

Mares has a significant role in supporting the Department’s governance and describes his contribution as “providing evidence-based strategic advice” to enable informed and defensible decision-making. Although Mares isn’t a member of the Department’s board he reports to the board, and therefore needed to understand the pressures confronting the board.

Mares said “The operational risks facing the private and public sectors are remarkably consistent. The AICD course has provided me with the skills to better understand these risks and provided me with governance strategies to address them” he said. He added

Mares said “The operational risks facing the private and public sectors are remarkably consistent. The AICD course has provided me with the skills to better understand these risks and provided me with governance strategies to address them” he said. He added that, “The AICD course also brought to life the strategic challenges faced by Directors of private or social enterprises. This has helped me better understand how public policy especially impacts on managing such enterprises.”

Tim explained that public administration helps not only the sound management public sector organisations but that the activities of government shape the strategic management and operations of the non-government sector also – and the AICD course has sharpened his thinking about both.

IPAA SA and AICD will be running the next CDC from November 09 to December 05. The course includes modules on the role of the board and the practice of directorship, decision making, financial literacy and seven more. Scheduled with time-poor Executives in mind, IPAA SA delivers this course over 5 weeks. For more information please click here.
